Activity Information

Being physically active on a daily basis is important for the healthy growth and development of babies, toddlers and pre-school children.

At this age, activities of any intensity should be encouraged, this might include both light activity and more energetic physical activity such as active play, dancing, swimming or riding a bike.

These activities can take place as unstructured active play but may also include mroe structured activities such as gym tots or soft play groups or clubs.

Recommendations for under 5s

The Department of Health recommends that:

Physical activity should be encouraged from birth, particularly through floor-based play and water-based activities in safe environments.

Children of pre-school age who are capable of walking unaided should aim to be physically active for at least 180 minutes (3 hours) per day, this can be spread throughout the day.

Under fives should reduce sedentary time (e.g. being restrained or sitting) for extended periods (except time spent sleeping).
