In its simplest form fencing is about beating an opponent in a ‘bout’. The aim is to ‘hit’ your opponent whilst avoiding being hit yourself. Each bout is contested on a long length of field, called a piste. There are three types of sword used for bouts. Each competitor is awarded a point if they gain a ‘hit’ on an opponent, until there is a winner. Competitors must be fit to attack their opponent and then defend against any advances to avoid being hit. Competitors wear safety clothing to protect themselves from the swords.
Bouts are undertaken individually but can be completed as part of a team.
